GING PAC Statement on Marco Rubio:

Marco Rubio’s conservative values are impeccable. The son of Cuban immigrants who fled Castro’s communist takeover, Rubio early learned respect for the value of freedom and limited government. After earning his law degree, he served eight years in the Florida House of Representatives, during which time he was Majority Whip, Majority Leader and Speaker of the House. William Murray has personally met with Rubio here in Washington, D.C. and can attest to the fact that he is a true social conservative who will vote with us consistently on pro-family issues.

For a little background on this convoluted race in Florida: In 2009, GOP Senator Mel Martinez said he was going to retire at the end of his term; then suddenly he resigned, leaving a vacancy. Even before he left office, the National Republican Senate Committee announced its support for Governor Charlie Crist. To make sure he would have no incumbent opposition, Crist appointed one of his aides to serve in the Senate seat until the election in November, 2010.

Before a primary could be held, and before the people of Florida could have any input on who they wanted as a Senate candidate, the NRSC was already endorsing and sending money to Crist. One NRSC staffer told me that one of the major reasons they supported Crist was his “fund raising ability.” Never mind his support for the Obama stimulus plan that is driving the national debt into the trillions. Republican leaders in Washington also didn’t care that Crist supported “same sex” civil unions. Florida voters, however, did care.

As soon as Crist announced, his poll numbers began diving, while his Republican challenger, Marco Rubio continued to climb. It soon got to the point that Crist did not even want to face Rubio in a primary, so he declared himself an Independent candidate,  This made it a three-way race in November, with Kendrick Meek being the Democratic candidate. GING-PAC supports Marco Rubio for Senate in the general election.
